Treatments
The Oedema Institute uses the latest research and technology to customise treatment plans for each patient. After our initial assessment, we discuss short and long‐term goals with patient and their referrers and formulate the appropriate treatment plan accordingly.
Lymphatic Massage
A specialised style of massage used to direct lymphatic fluid out of the tissue encouraging better movement in the lymphatic system. A slow rhythmic movement of hands over the tissue. Pressure tension adjusted as required. Used for;
- Swelling in the limbs
- Lymphoedema
- Lipoedema
- Removal of toxins from the circulatory system
- Vascular conditions associated with oedema
- Autoimmune conditions (where the lymphatic system has been compromised)
Sequential Intermittent Pneumatic Compression (SIPC)
SIPC therapy involves the application of external pressure to the limbs that may improve circulation and removal of lymphatic fluid. Studies have shown SIPC to permanently decrease limb circumference, improved skin integrity and elasticity.
Laser therapy
Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) has beneficial effects on cells and tissues in the treatment of fibrous scar tissue associated with post scar surgery. Evidence suggesting LLLT encourages lymphogenesis and stimulates lymphatics. LLLT has been shown to be an effective;
- treatment of inflammatory skin conditions
- leg ulcers
- cording and skin grafts
- chronic non-healing wounds
- scar tissue. Scar tissue post surgery is important to manage to reduce mobility and reduce lymphatic complications. Cording after breast surgery another condition restricting movement. Can be effectively treated by trained therapists using laster therapy and mobilization techniques acquired through their training. These conditions can be resolved effectively once diagnosed and managed.
Lipo-Plus Multilase
The Lipo-Plus Multilase is one of the most advanced LLLT device in photo biomodulation technology and used at the Oedema Institute for the treatment of inflammation and decongestion of skin tissue.
Benefits include;
- Treating larger areas of the body than the more traditional LLLT devices
- Generating better movement of lymphatic flow
- Pain reduction in the muscle and joints
- Increased bloody circulation
Recent trials at the Institute on Lipoedema patients showed improvements in;
- Joint and muscle pain
- Mobility
With a percentage of the trial participants reporting increased energy levels.
Bandaging
Short Stretch Bandaging
- Applied to the limb by a trained specialist to reduce limb volume before garment fitting.
- This style of bandage can be washed and reused but require to be administered daily.
- Good for those patients with sensitive skin to latex products.
Multi-layered bandaging
- Should be applied by a trained specialist.
- Can be left on for longer periods but not reusable.
- Effective in reducing limb volume.
- Some patients may have a sensitivity to some of the different styles of MLB.
- Comes in different lengths and width for ease of donning.
